Public Display of Appreciation

Had an interesting conversation with my wife today about why Indians do not explicitly clap or appreciate when they see Indian solders walking beside them in uniforms. Clapping and extending their thank you to the US Marines when they pass by them is one of the nicest things I found in Americans, and we both were really sad and felt bad that we haven’t seen an Indian do it or have done it ourselves to an Indian solder in India. It will be so nice to acknowledge that the sacrifice they make is not gone unnoticed.

It’s not that we do not have any respect for them, I feel so proud/respectful if I come to know of a Brigadier, or a Major, Naval officer, Air force, any NDA graduate, IAS or an IPS officer. But why aren’t we publicly displaying that respect? And that’s when we both realized that, in India there is no public demonstration of emotions anywhere. Although the PDAs are getting popular in cosmopolitan cities, 90% of India is super private when it comes to expressing their emotions and affections. We are actually not rude people, we are little private with our feelings. Now this feels so much better.

But as I mentioned above, it will feel so nice to extend a token of thanks to a person who is sacrificing a lot for your survival. It will make them feel that all the sacrifices they make are not gone unnoticed. If public display of affection can get popularized so can public display of appreciation.

I dint know I missed Huntsville

Recently, I had an opportunity to visit Huntsville, AL... For some reason, thinking about seeing those streets and places felt very happy inside me. My wife said, I was jumping like a kid. And I was really surprised to learn that I feel like that towards a place that

I really wanted to escape from, 5 years ago. It was like visiting chennai for the first time after missing it for

1 and half yrs.

Well the drive itself was fun. I was driving on I-24... I remember that scary drive sitting

in the back seat with Jaygopal from Atalanta after seeing Boys. I remember him saying “Look for the sign “ALABAMA FIREWORKS” and you have to take the next exit after that and drive straight to Huntsville. That US 72”. Well guess what, Alabama Firwork is renamed as Alabama Tennessee Firework company and they removed the banner from that exit. I also remembered Mahesh explaining how I-24

passing through TN then a small bit in GA and back to TN in his own style.

It was fun to drive around the country side. Believe it or not, I was really

happy to see the speed board reading “max speed

70mph”. Entering Huntsville was totally different feeling, there used to be a construction area just before we enter Huntsville on US 72 and it becoming I 565. Well in 5 yrs time, the construction has been completed and right after the point, we could see the whole of Huntsville city.

Then US72 got converted to I565. As I drove I saw the exit signs reading, “Exit 17 jordan lane”, “Exit 15 Sparkman dr, Bob Wallace dr, Old Madison Pike”. Took Exit 15 and went to Sparkman

dr, and entered UAH. O M G.. the feeling was unbelievable. Nothing had changed. Took a curve beside the duck pond and left into VBRH and EB parking lot.

Nothing has really changed, the university looked just the same.

Remember there used to be a smell of the plant near the place where you keep the cycle, that was still there. I still remember Manish taking me and Paddu to EB for the first to meet Swathi

and I smelled that smell for the first time. (I was disappointed to discover that swathi was a male at that time). Remember the sound of the loose metal on the stairs, the door handle sound on the second floor, when you try to open it. Well first time, I was really happy to hear those sound. I cannot explain how these silly things could make you smile. I really loved the moment.

I just breezed into the EB hallway and looked at the faculty list. It was very nice to read some

familiar names on the board Dr. Gaede, Dr. Kulik, Dr. Milenkovic, Dr. Javono, Dr. Yoo. And guess what, Dr Adami is still the chair. That gave a

confidence that, the department also couldn't have changed in these years. Took some pictures in front of each labs, esp the EB lab where 90% of Yahoo messenger communication had happened in whole of Huntsville. Met Dr. Yoo, Dr. Milenkovick, Dr. Gaede. I always known Dr. Gaede as the person with great memory. Well here is the proof, she remembered my full name and called me with that before even I introduced myself to her. I was surprised and I was

happy. While exiting the EB building, there is phone that students can use. I don't even have a count on the number of calls I made from the courtesy phone from EB.

Came out of EB, just walked around the material science building and checked my balance in ACU. They gave me an interest of $1.02 for the $25 I had when I left Huntsville.

Opposite to ACU, they built a big football ground for chargers and they have also built a parking lot opposite to UFC. Those house on the street beside Math Department building (Madison or Morton Hall .. couldn't narrow down which one was that), they are all gone. They grounded all of the house.

Drove to Quail Point, and saw the first apartment I rented (1-C). Also

visited the famous Kathi-Koothu spot. Schlotzsky's Deli, thats a name you wouldn't have heard after leaving Huntsville. The Quiznos where Bala, Mahesh and Parthan used to work. Off campus book store where we used to buy used books. Remember that Taco bell that was near NCRH, that got moved next to Off campus book store. It was interesting to see the names Suraj imports and Namaste Plaza. Vinny's got renamed to Masala and India Palace is now Sithar.

Then I drove to Tech-Hall, Met Dr. Dan Rochowiak. He dint remember my name, he never did, but he did recognize me. I saw the parking lot outside and remembered Manoj and Mahesh praising America for building Parking lots and even trees in the third floor (they thought it was the third floor but came down to the first floor, being fooled by the LED

buttons in the tech hall elevator). Remember that Mechanical department computer lab, I bet there would be quite a big community of people who would have accessed internet from there.

Next stop Sherwood Park. 6106 Karen Dave Dr - That was the first place I stayed after landing in this country. Visited 6322, 6320, took a look at the rocket and space shuttle. Saw that shortcut path on Winn Dr to Tech hall Via Boing. Drove a little distance on 256, went to the Walmart we used to go. They built a Mall opposite to that. It was nostalgic.

For some people, Huntsville is a bad memory, and some don't even want to remember that

it was part of their life ones upon a time. But for me, Huntsville did teach me a lot. It though me to live alone, thought me to be fun, thought me to be independent, thought me to drive cars and to wreck it the next day, even better it showed how scary a real life could be.

After 4 hrs of roaming in and around the city, the excitement did subside a little and my wife

was already in “Could we leave now?” mood. Well that 4hrs, I was super excited, happy, smiling and I did miss the Rocket City. Whether its waste of money or time, I don't care, I feel like its worth a trip.

Short Stories

Inspired by Viswa's short stories skill, I am planning to write short stories too...
These may be the stupidest stories you ever read... or even might be ok for you to grasp it...
whatever ... I have decided to throw away my thoughts into a story...

So BEWARE ;)

DASAVATHARAM does not live upto its Hype...

Its an ordinary movie with Kamal in 10 different getups. The story is not an extraordinary story for the HYPE given. The main concentration of the movie is Kamal's performance and the make ups. One has not disappointed even a single sec, but the makeups are not that impressive. That stops from giving the full thumps up. Indian and Avai Shanmugi makeups were better than some of the other makeups. The makeups for the Villan, Japanese character doesn't suite at all. Its clearly evident that its a made up character. Doesn't look natural. Kamal has lived as that character, but the make does not support him at all. They needed some final touch, they looked as a half boiled food. So Kamal's effort is not totally appreciated by the naked eye.

The movie also lack in screen play. 3 of the 10 character seems to be inserted for the sake of making records... the story could have lived without them. Asin character is so stupid. She shouting and claiming "perumal" is important than the people who are dieing in an accident seems to be more annoying and totally unnecessary. She running away with the Perumal idol in the climax when some one is short dead, makes us feel "WHY? WAT A CRAP?".

The Graphics part are not that realistic. Its seems like some one superimposed animated movie and real movie together. Its not bad, its awesome compared to any other movie in Indian film industry. But, the Hype spoils it again. For the hype given as the best technically sound movie ever made in the world, tends to expect all these perfections. And the rope stunts. if you cannot do it well you shouldnt do it. It spoils the effort you put in it. Also the dialog's, the scene when the villan kamal asks the Japanese guy do you remember Heroshima, and the Japaneses responds saying remember Pearl Harbour.. makes us feel... "CHai....." .. These could have avoided...

If you expect the movie to me an ordinary Tamil movie, you will have a visual treat. But if you go with the expectation from the Hype given by the movie makers, you will be disappointed like me. Kamal's performance is extraordinary. The movie is made in a decent manner. No fooling people. No One man army stuffs. Everything and anything has reasons in the story. No masala effects. No unnecessary songs and duet. Just a normal movie. they did not think the audience is a fool. Kamal wanted to take a movie like that and he did it.

The comedy in the first half by the Andra CBI officer, Balram Naidu...is hilarious. Sad that he just comes for 30 min of the whole movie. The way he acted as president Bush, man thats hilarious too. He dint stop pulling Bush's leg. Heard that kamal wanted to screen the movie to President Bush, would have been interesting how he would have taken that. The Villan, Flitcher character... kamal has done is so well... the fights and stunts are awesome. He has acted like a real trained hitman. My best role was the 12th century Kamal, Rangarajan Nambi. Man the scene was really awesome, but it had no relevance with the story. I have no clue why was this added to the story. The Japanese character had relevance with the story, but he was part of the story only for the climax fight, Which was truly and really nice. The Vincent character again has no relevance with the story, but Kamals dialog delivery is awesome. The old grandma character, man that old lady had one big hand ;). The 8 foot tall man character.. i have no clue Y he always talks as his tongue been cut... The Punjabi character was really good again, he did well as a Punjabi, but Y did he come in the movie, No clue. In the climax, his cancer been cured by a bullet short by the villan kamal, seems to be too lame.

As such if you see the movie without expectation, it will be good. The Hype spoiled the effort put in the movie. All together, DASAVATHARAM is not a total disappointment, Yet disappointed.

Google Videos stoped buffering from middle...

Google videos was so fun and people take the hard work to rip up latest Indian movies and uploaded it for others to watch them.... the best thing i like abt google was... with the simplest way possible they would provide all the features they could... Most of the online streaming sites would not allow scrolling the track bar... but google video allowed it... we could click anywhere in the track bar and it will take 1 min or so to start buffering from that point and then they start playing...

But now... if their player does not have that point buffered (grayed) u cannot play it.. it wouldn't buffer from the middle... this kind of sucks... more than that... the video would start from the first... esp when u r trying for full screen in the middle of the video.... it starts playing again from the beginning of the video.. this kind of sucks big time and very annoying too.

I don't know if Google had really changed it like this or its some setting in my computer that does that.... I tried from my office computer as well as my home computer.... it has the same result...

I would really vote for google to roll it back....
